Are you ready for some football? We started our first game of paragraph football today to critique and rewrite our work.
AIM: I will learn the MEAL format for paragraphs and rewrite mine with 100% accuracy.
Standard: 7.W-E.3 Write content-based reports that frame a key question and group details and explanations in a logical order.
Do Now: We calculated our Do Now grade by reviewing the past eleven days of performance.
Lesson Steps:
Once all Do Nows were graded we started to learn how to play paragraph football. We went over the rules and then randomly picked two paragraphs to go to the field. We calculated the advances of each paragraph and also the fouls and determined the winning paragraph. This set the purpose for writing our paragraphs.
We then went over the MEAL format of writing expository paragraphs. We learned the importance of starting with the evidence first and then explaining why that evidence mattered in the analysis section. We then practiced writing a conclusion and main idea sentence after all the evidence and analysis was established.
Homework: Rewrite the paragraph from yesterday using the MEAL format.
Handout: This handout explains the rules of Paragraph Football and also has a graphic organizer for the MEAL format on the back.
